The entire NBA world was buzzing when it was announced that the Sacramento Kings were open to trade talks around their star player, De’Aaron Fox.
Most people assumed this happened because Fox had requested a move from the Kings.
But it turns out that wasn’t the case.
According to Jake Fischer, the Kings were the ones who first came to Fox and his management about putting him on the trade market.
“It’s the Kings, according to the league sources, who first approached De’Aaron Fox’s Klutch Sports representation about putting the All-Star guard on the trade market with immediate effect. Sacramento sent word to some interested teams as early as last week that it was open to such overtures. That’s the flipped switch in Sactown,” Fischer wrote, via NBACentral.
The Sacramento Kings were actually the first to approach De’Aaron Fox’s representatives about potentially putting him on the trade market, per @JakeLFischer

This revelation from Fischer gives Kings fans more insight into the state of the team.
The Kings and Fox have had an uneasy relationship lately, especially because they haven’t been able to hash out a contract extension and keep him in Sacramento long-term.
Perhaps they feel they’d rather trade him now than deal with contract negotiations that might not ever go anywhere later.
According to other reports, Fox is keen on playing for the San Antonio Spurs and would be happy to sign an extension with that team.
So, even though he wasn’t the one who brought up a trade, he is clearly okay with it and ready for the next steps.
Some people feel the Kings are making the wrong decision here, and this could severely hurt the team after a few promising seasons.
But it seems like the front office understood the situation with Fox, could foresee the future, and wanted to be preemptive about starting a new chapter.
