The 2024-25 NBA season has been an impressive one for the San Antonio Spurs, who appear to be ahead of schedule in their rebuild.
The Spurs have the best young player in the world, Victor Wembanyama, who has made significant progress in his second year.
However, the team also needs to build around other young players like Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell.
While San Antonio’s been more competitive than expected this season, they still sit toward the bottom of the Western Conference standings.
It shouldn’t be a surprise, though, because the conference is as stacked as ever, and any losing streak can drop a team several spots in the standings.
Skip Bayless has been a longtime Spurs fan and openly questioned how the team’s record is worse than he thinks it should be via his personal X account.
“I just don’t understand the Spurs, who should be so much better than 20-23. They blew out Indiana in Paris, now they’re getting blown out by Indiana in Paris. They have an MVP candidate – greatest shot-blocker ever. They have young talent and vet savvy around him. 3 under .500?” Bayless tweeted.

Bayless clearly had high hopes and expectations for San Antonio, though what he described is the key trait of any young and up-and-coming team in the league.
Inconsistency is an indicator of a squad that needs time to gel and learn the professional game, so it’s not necessarily surprising that the Spurs record looks poor on paper.
Still, the franchise must be thrilled with its current state, as it is only a few moves away from being a real playoff threat.
