India captain Rohit Sharma ended the suspense over his potential retirement from the one-day format after guiding the team to its third ICC Champions Trophy title in Dubai on Sunday.
“I am not going to retire from this (ODI) format. Going forward please don’t spread rumours,” Rohit said after the post-match press conference.
In the final, Rohit led from the front, scoring an 83-ball 76 to give India a flying start in a 252-run chase. The 37-year-old, along with veteran Virat Kohli, became India’s most decorated cricketer after winning his fourth ICC title.
He won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the Champions Trophy in 2013 under MS Dhoni’s leadership, and led India to the T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025 titles as captain.
Rohit had retired from T20Is following India’s win over South Africa in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup, and there was speculation that he could make a similar announcement after the Champions Trophy 2025 final.
Meanwhile, Kohli shut down similar retirement rumours after India’s victory in the final. While he said that he wanted the team to be in a better position when he left, he didn’t mention anything about an impending retirement.
