Last season, the Boston Celtics had to overcome a weak bench on their way to the NBA championship, but this season has been a somewhat different story.
Though they still rank near the bottom of the league in bench points per game, reserve guard Payton Pritchard is putting up 14.1 points per game and forward Torrey Craig, their newest addition, has the potential to boost their second unit a little more.
“Ultimately, the goal is to win. So I’m gonna do whatever I can to try to contribute on helping us win ball games,” Craig said, via Justin Turpin of WEEI.

Sitting second in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics don’t need much help, but Craig is the type of player who can contribute on both ends of the floor.
He has a history as a capable 3-and-D wing, and so far this season he’s shooting 45.9 percent from 3-point range, albeit in a small sample of 11 games (nine with the Chicago Bulls).
Four years ago, he was a contributor off the bench for the Phoenix Suns when they made a run all the way to the 2021 NBA Finals.
Boston had an easy road to the 2024 NBA Finals, but this season there is stiff competition in the Eastern Conference in the form of the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks, who are are vastly improved compared to a year ago.
But if Boston regains its hunger, desire and motivation, it should be the favorites to win it all once again.
