South Africa opener Matthew Breetzke registered the highest score by a batter on One-Day International debut during the ongoing Tri-Nation series match against New Zealand in Lahore on Monday.
Breetzke scored 150 off 148 balls, and smashed 11 fours and five sixes to achieve the feat. He broke the record of Desmond Haynes, who had scored 148 for West Indies on debut against Australia in 1978.
The record for the highest score on ODI debut for a South African was previously held by Colin Ingram, who had scored 124 against Zimbabwe in 2010.
Breetzke’s knock on Monday helped the Proteas to 304 for six in 50 overs. The 26-year-old was supported by Jamie Smith’s 41 and Wiaan Mulder’s 64.
The explosive top-order batter was signed by Lucknow Super Giants for his base price of Rs. 75 lakh during the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction last year.
