The Minnesota Timberwolves reached the Western Conference Finals last season.
Then, they decided to trade their second-best player.
That wasn’t a usual decision to make, and it’s not a surprise to see their regression.
They lost by double digits to the Detroit Pistons despite Anthony Edwards going off for a career-high 53 points.
That’s why sports analyst Bill Simmons took to X to claim that their situation had officially turned into a ‘code red.’
I know football is on and yeah I’m watching, but I have NBA on as well and lemme tell you something…
THE 2024-2025 TIMBERWOLVES SITUATION HAS BEEN UPGRADED TO A CODE RED
— Bill Simmons (@BillSimmons) January 5, 2025
It’s hard to argue with that statement.
The Timberwolves have been fairly inconsistent this season, and you don’t see that hunger and defensive prowess anymore.
Edwards called them out for being ‘soft.’
Granted, Karl-Anthony Towns has never been a good defensive player, and his absence only hurts their offense.
Then again, the team has also fallen off from an attitude perspective.
Rudy Gobert is back to being exposed and pushed around even by smaller players.
Julius Randle is an okay player, but he’s no Karl-Anthony Towns.
He cannot shoot threes and most of his numbers haven’t translated into winning basketball.
It’s still early, and the Timberwolves have a solid core.
But if this continues, they could and should at least consider moving Randle and other pieces to find someone else who can help them turn things around.
