For a while, it looked like Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets was on his way to yet another NBA MVP trophy.
But as the season has gone on, one player has repeatedly shown that he has what it takes to claim his first Most Valuable Player award.
The NBA released its latest MVP ladder and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder was at the top of the list, ahead of Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks.
“After averaging almost 33 PPG against the top three seeds in the East, SGA takes the No. 1 spot,” the NBA wrote on X.

Gilgeous-Alexander is having his greatest season yet in 2024-25.
Not only is his team the best in the West but he has put up monster numbers, averaging 31.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game on 52.2 percent shooting from the field.
As mentioned in the social media post, Gilgeous-Alexander has done well against the three best teams in the East.
Just the other night, he scored 31 on the Cleveland Cavaliers, even though his team ultimately lost.
A few days before, he scored 33 in a win against the Boston Celtics.
Gilgeous-Alexander has been mostly unstoppable this year, and the Thunder have benefited from his great performances.
Now he is the favorite to win MVP, and some people feel his team is the frontrunner for a title.
It’ll be easier to win MVP than a championship, but Gilgeous-Alexander definitely has a chance of doing both, which would cement this season as his best yet.
There is still a lot of time before MVP voting begins, so can he keep it up all the way until the end of the regular season?
